Soft, savory, and full of heart. Moimoi is proof that beans can be more than just beans. Steamed to perfection in banana leaves or foil, this Nigerian delicacy is a celebration food, a comfort food, and an everyday meal rolled into one.
From Lagos street corners to family Sunday tables, Moimoi is a dish that carries stories of tradition, ingenuity, and community.
Roots of a Dish
Moimoi, made primarily from peeled beans, blended peppers, onions, and spices, reflects the creativity of Nigerian cooking. Historically, beans have been a staple source of protein, and steaming them into this pudding-like form not only preserved nutrients but also made them beautifully tender.
In Yoruba homes, Moimoi often appears alongside jollof rice, fried rice, or pap. In parties, it’s a must-have side dish, cherished for its flavor and soft texture.
