Jamaican Sweet Potato Pudding

They call it “Hell a top, Hell a bottom, and hallelujah in the middle.”
That’s not just a saying, it’s the spirit of Jamaican Sweet Potato Pudding, a slow-baked, spiced dessert passed down through generations of strong hands and soft hearts.

More than a pudding, it’s a ceremony of culture. An Afro-Caribbean treasure that fuses African culinary roots with island-grown ingredients and Sunday-afternoon love.

Jamaican Sweet Potato Pudding has roots in enslaved African cooking traditions combining ground provisions, coconut, and spices to create something filling, flavorful, and festive. Baked over firewood in iron pots (coal top, coal bottom), it became a staple for weekend gatherings, funerals, and family celebrations. Today, it’s still a must-have in many Jamaican homes, a symbol of endurance, celebration, and sweetness after struggle.

Ingredients  ⋅2 lbs Jamaican sweet potatoes (white flesh, not orange) grated  1 cup grated coconut or 1 can coconut milk 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup flour 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp grated nutmeg 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup raisins (optional, but beloved) 2 tbsp melted butter 1 cup water (or coconut milk for extra richness) How to Make It Grate the sweet potatoes using a fine grater.
